Toddling Toddler

We were all exhilarated last evening when Matty finally decided that it was high time he started walking independently. The precious moment has finally arrived on the day when Matty turns 1 year, 2 months and 26 days old! A little later than expected… since he has always been a fore-runner in terms of gross motor skills since a newborn.

It was magical to see him actually running about in less than an hour later. Now I fully understand why mummies who have experienced the moment kept saying that it can happen anytime without you knowing and progresses faster than anyone can imagine.

Matty’s facial expression was a clear indication of just how proud he was of himself for hitting this major milestone of his life. He was equally as excited as everyone else with his new-found “freedom” and independence. We are sure that he will put it to good use (or should we say “exploit”) in the days to come.

Our little baby has now grown to be a toddling toddler in that magical split-second!

(It was a good thing that we managed to capture the moment on video http://kaikoon.multiply.com/video/item/1)

To Kill A Mocking Bird

Being woke up by a sudden cry is nothing strange to Mummy ever since Matty came into our lives... but for the last 2 weeks other than Matty's cries, I have been constantly stirred in the wee hours of the morning by a different type of cry.

We got ourselves a new neighbour who likes to sing at some unearthly hour. A new (irritating) bird just moved into the park next to our house not too long ago. We are guessing it could be a magpie going by the sound it makes. Just a wild guess though cos we learned how a magpie sounds like from one of Matty's Hi-5 VCD. The stupid bird (did I mention irritating too!) starts chirping as early as 4.30 in the morning. Not only is the singing loud... it echoes due to the silence around the neighbourhood (obviously... because most people in their right mind will not be up at such a crazy hour). As it is... Mummy is facing a sleep deprivation crisis due to the constant running to the loo in the middle of the night and Matty's need for a cuddle, milk, water etc etc etc... having to deal with a bird which has no sense of consideration for his immediate neighbour and trying too hard to outdo the rooster is just too much to bear.

At least if it is an insensitive neighbour who sings away on his karaoke system... we could have easily called the police in. What do we do with a bird which we are not even sure how it looks like and hops from tree to tree other than to curse and swear while lying in bed and hopefully drop back to get as much sleep as possible before Matty decides it is rise and shine for him.

Oh So Hyper ~~

We run the possibility of having another hyperactive baby! Argghhhh... not the best of thoughts that we would like to entertain after our experience with Matty.

Mummy was back at Dr Lim's clinic last Saturday for another around of checkup. Now at 11 weeks and measuring 4.4cm from crown to rump... Baby Junior sure can move alot. He (Mummy and Daddy are almost certain from our intuition that Baby Junior is a boy too!) was waving his arms and kicking his legs non-stop. Even Dr Lim cannot help but comment that Baby Junior was really active. The scary part was that we don't even remember Matty to be this active when he was at 11 weeks. Could this mean that Baby Junior will be more hyper than Matty? Guess that only time can tell. Mummy is willing to settle for another hyperactive baby on the condition that he sleeps well at night. Fingers and toes crossed!

Due to the fatigue from not being able to sleep well for the last 3 weeks (a result of Matty's crankiness, Mummy fallen sick and Matty gotten hospitalised)... Mummy lost even more weight - 2.5 kg in just 1.5 months. It was a bit of concern to Dr Lim.... but I'm not too worried as I had built up a "reserve" of 5kg prior to getting pregnant. Not a bad way to burn it actually.

In the meantime... the "chopsticks test" predicts Baby Junior to be a boy. We should be able to tell if that is the case at the next round of checkup... of course depending on Baby Junior's positioning. As much as Mummy would like to have a girl to get a good mix (and to dress her up)... we will settle for 2 even if Baby Junior is indeed a boy. I don't think I can handle having 3 boys running around (we run a 50% risk if you think about it). Anyway the advantages if Baby Junior turns out to be a boy - we get to recycle most of Matty's clothing... which is a huge saving considering the amount we had spent on getting those clothes which he hardly wore and of course I think boys tend to click better together. They will make good playmates (and not to mention fighting-mates) in the years to come.

As we approach the end of the first trimester... Mummy is feeling alot more relieved. Especially lately when the bloatedness and light-headedness seem to have subsided alot and makes me wonder if everything is ok in there for Baby Junior. Hopefully I can start feeling the movement soon... which is usually the case for subsequent pregnancies and serve as a form of daily assurance for Mummy. But I would like to clarify that it should be movement during the day and not night. Good to start letting Baby Junior know that when it is time to sleep... we sleep.

Caught a Bug

Matty woke up with a more than ever cranky moody on Sunday morning for no rhyme or reason (or so we thought). Mummy didn't detect that Matty was running a fever until after a shower and he was still feeling warm. The weather has been unpredictable lately... extremely warm today and the next day raining cats and dogs.

Dr Chan suggested that it was probably better if we bring Matty down to see her even though his temperature was only 38 degree celsius, on the account that he was behaving as if he was very uncomfy. It was a good thing that we did as his temperature went up to 39.6 degree celsius within an hour. Matty had to get admitted for observation so as to make sure that the temperature would not rise beyond that.

Shortly after the medication was administered... Matty's fever seem to have subsided alot and he was back to his active self again and we were not even done with the admission registration. However, the temperature fluctuated throughout the rest of the day and we were ordered to get a blood test and urine test done on Monday... dashing the remote chance of getting discharged on Monday morning.

Drawing the blood was a big challenge. Not only do we need to restrain Matty and prevent him from moving... his tiny vein made it hard to get the needle at the right spot. Mummy's heart ached to see him cry so much. Due to the amount of force used... it gave Matty a little bruise on his left arm.

Matty probably was a phobia now of nurses in cute aprons. Because he will be reminded of the yucky medication that he had to take. Every time he sees one entering the room he will instinctively scream and cry first to protest. Otherwise the rest of the time he acted like he was on some sort of holiday away from home. Nobody could tell that he was ill.

The temperature finally stablised on Monday night and we were allowed to be discharged on Tuesday morning. It was good to know that the whole saga was finally over.

Matty rolling around and having fun in the cot...

In trance with the TV...

Time to go home. Better taking count of the bags we have...

Panda Eyes

Matty turns exactly 14 months today but something is just not improving. He hasn't been sleeping well lately (not like he was previously) and each time he wakes up it is a painful process trying to coax him back to sleep.

As a result of the lack of sleep... Mummy hasn't been able to concentrate in the office and had fallen sick more than a week ago. Daddy caught the germs from Mummy earlier this week and has been leaking like a tap until now. The fact that Mummy is expecting BJ makes me even more tired... and the constant trips to the toilet in the middle of the night cuts short on my rest time at night.

Matty was at his worst behaviour last night. He was up at 1.30 am and after more than 2 hours of patting, rocking, lecturing and what not he was still fighting sleep. At 4 am... we decided to take him out for a ride in the car and hopefully the motion will help him to fall back to sleep. It worked... thanks goodness! Never imagined that we will need to resort to such extreme measures. It goes to show the degree of our desperation.

When will we see some good times?
